The Basics

Crown or bridge — what's the difference?

A crown is a custom cap that covers a single damaged, weak, or root-canal-treated tooth — restoring its strength, shape, and appearance.

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a natural-looking replacement to crowns on the teeth either side — literally bridging the gap. Both are fixed in place, so they look and feel like your own teeth.

Could You Need One?

When a crown or bridge helps.

If any of these sound familiar, a crown or bridge may be the right way to protect or restore your smile.

A cracked or weak tooth

A crown caps and protects a tooth that's cracked, worn, or at risk of breaking.

A large or failing filling

When a filling is too big to hold, a crown restores the tooth's strength.

After a root canal

A treated tooth becomes brittle — a crown protects it so it lasts.

One or more missing teeth

A bridge fills the gap with a fixed, natural-looking replacement.

Material Options

Made to match your smile.

We'll help you choose the material that best balances looks, strength, and where the tooth sits in your mouth.

All-ceramic

The most natural-looking and completely metal-free — ideal for teeth in your smile zone.

Porcelain-fused

A porcelain surface over a strong core — a great blend of durability and natural appearance.

Gold & metal

Exceptionally durable and gentle on opposing teeth — often chosen for out-of-sight back teeth.

What to Expect

How it comes together.

Traditionally two visits over about two weeks, with a natural-looking temporary in between.

Simple to look after.

  • Avoid very hard foodsGo easy on ice and hard candy to avoid chips or cracks.
  • Wear a night guard if you grindGrinding wears restorations down — a night guard adds years of life.

Questions

Frequently asked.

A crown caps and protects a single damaged tooth. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a replacement to the teeth on either side of the gap.

No — it's done under local anesthetic, so it's comfortable. Some mild, short-lived sensitivity around the tooth afterward is normal and settles quickly.

Typically 10–15 years or more with good care. Material and hygiene make the difference — and a night guard helps if you grind.

It depends on the material and your specific case. We provide a written quote after an exam and check your insurance.

Ask us — it depends on the tooth. Traditionally it takes two visits over about two weeks, with a temporary protecting the tooth in between.

A bridge is faster and doesn't need surgery; an implant preserves bone and doesn't affect neighbouring teeth. We'll walk you through the trade-offs for your situation.

Crowns and bridges are frequently covered at least in part. We'll verify your benefits and direct bill where possible. We direct bill all major insurers and accept the CDCP.
